I'm sure we've all experienced fashion peer pressure at one point or another, even if we didn't give into it. Even those people who seem like they truly don't care what anyone else thinks have probably felt it.
Even if we refuse to give in to fashion peer pressure, it's out there.
We feel it all the time from the media. Though celebrities aren't our actual peers, a lot of times the media uses "peer pressure" to convey the message that we need to dress & look like the celebrities. And, there's nothing wrong with this, as long as you still have & follow your own ideas & opinions. One thing that many people forget, is that just because a certain dress looks great on Catherine Zeta Jones, doesn't mean it's going to look as good on them.
Magazines also put out fashion peer pressure. Almost any magazine that covers fashion will have issues that show the "Fashion Must Haves" for the season. But, no matter how "Must Have" they say they are, you most likely can live happily & safely without them. And, just as how a dress on C.Z.J. won't look as great on everyone else, trendy items or the "must haves" won't look great on everyone either.
Then, there's also the fashion peer pressure we experience from our actual peers. I remember when I was in middle school, there was a time where almost every girl had one of those shirts from Express(I think) that were either black with a big yellow X on them or white with a red X (there may have been other varieties). I thought they looked dumb were simply ugly, so I never got one, but almost every other girl did. But most of them regretted it once they went out of style a few weeks later.
Now, the girls that I'm around(most in their early 20's) tend to experience fashion peer pressure that deals more with showing too much. Nowadays, so many girls seem to expose too much skin. As Christians, we shouldn't try to look overtly sexy & we also shouldn't show too much skin. I'm definitely not suggesting that we only wear turtle-necks, but we should avoid tops with necklines that are too low & show a lot of cleavage and skirts & shorts that are way too short, you get the idea.
Remember, there are a lot of clothes that are stylish, subtly sexy, and conservative.
Finally, Do NOT give in to fashion peer pressure! Stand your ground & wear only what you like & think is appropriate!
